Vád alá helyeznek egy 17 éves fiatalembert, aki brutális módon megvakított hat lovat az angliai Hampshire-ben. Az ügyészségen dolgozó fiatal nő felkeresi barátját, Martin Dysartot, a neves pszichiátert, s megkéri foglalkozzon a fiúval.
Martin Dysart pszichiáter feladata feltárni az utat, ami a szörnyű bűntettig vezetett. A kezelések során a fiú és Dysart idegölő csatákat vívnak, hogy megismerjék egymás titkait. De végeredményben ki kinek a páciense?
Dysart a saját démonjai szürke rabja. Alan együtt vágtat a sajátjaival. A fiú és orvosa között szövődő kapcsolat mindkettejük életét megváltoztatja, de megmenti-e...?
